Yarm1914 believe that Bert, known as Bertie was born in 1888, the first born of James and Ellen nee Walls married in 1887 when James lived with his family in Eaglescliffe and Ellen lived with her family in Tinkers Yard, Yarm. James was a labourer in a wood yard and the family lived in Danby's Yard. By 1901 the family had been joined by Florence aged 7, Alice 3 and James 1. Bertie was 13 and working as a gardener. The family then moved to Eaglescliffe and Florence became a servant in Eaglescliffe before marrying Benjamin Shires in 1916. Bertie became a sand getter and salmon fisher before marrying Margaret Jane Suggett from Stainsby's Yard in Yarm in 1915.
